The 2009 garden is officially in!

Main GardenBack Garden
This year it took a little more patience to get it all together with the addition of Little Lia and watching her and keeping her happy while busy in the yard, but it's all finally in and planted. The only thing new is spinach because Frank has really been wanting Jeanne to grow this. All of the other plants (except some of the specific types of tomatoes) have been grown in our gardens before. All are either organic seedlings or plants, except for the broccoli and cauliflower. Per usual, when Frank was asked to pick up 6 broccoli plants he came home with 9 (although they sold them in flats of 9) - however, he also came home with 9 cauliflower plants "because he likes cauliflower". And, per usual, Jeanne squeezed them in, which might be a big mistake depending on the size they grow to. Oh well, we have another mouth to feed and Jeanne plans on freezing as much as possible for us to eat well into winter. It's a labor of love for her, and feeds us quite well. With only 1 packet of beet seeds purchased, there was only room for 1 row of beets, so not really very many at all (Frank likes this). We're hopeful about the corn too again this year it was incredibly delicious last year! The only thing not diagramed is the fingerling potatoes.

Baby Robin's nest in our backyard bush

See the baby Robins? There are at least 4 in the nest, you can't see them all. Jeanne missed the photo opt of the evening when either mom or dad (?) was in the bush right next to the babies, just after feeding. After getting the camera the parent wouldn't perch close for the perfect picture so here are the babies! We didn't even know this family was there and Frank just trimmed the heck out of this bush on Sunday too! This is a super tall bush so that's why we hadn't seen them.

Mother's Day at Home

We spent Mother's Day mostly in the yard and garden. Frank helped till up the garden this year which was a big treat for Jeanne. When asked what to do for Mother's Day, Jeanne wanted help with the garden and yard. It was a long but beautiful day. We were up at 7 a.m. and out the door at 9 a.m. to go get the manure and peat for the garden and didn't come inside until 8 p.m. Not only did we till the garden, but weeded it, weeded other beds, trimmed bushes, relocated a huge tall grass (and buried Carlotta underneath it), mulched, cut & trimmed grass - AND Frank installed Jeanne's hitch! What a day! We were blessed with the most beautiful weather also! And, Lia hung in her pack-n-play a couple different times playing and watching Mom and Dad work in the yard.

Layered Pasta – Spinach – Prosciutto - Ricotta Pie

This was delicious! Jeanne made this for dinner to use up her homemade ricotta and some prosciutto we had. The recipe didn't call for the prosciutto, but she revised it to include the salt-cured ham. The topping was actually whipped egg whites with the red sauce folded in!

Sunday at the Goat Farm

Beautiful isn't it? The farm was in New Richmond and the drive out there was just beautiful. Debo, Fred and Jimmy joined us for the goat farm tour. Jeanne has learned about this group of Cincinnati based folks who are into Whole Foods and this was one of their meetings. Happy chickens!
Debo wtih one of the horses.
Lia was totally digging on the goats
2 Baby goats were born the night before we arrived. Doesn't it look like the mama goat is smiling at you?

Geocaching with Debo, Fred & Jim

Frank's brother Jim came to town with their cousin Debo and her friend Fred. On Saturday we went to Sharonwoods for some hiking AND our first experience at Geocaching. It was a beautiful day!!! If you are wondering what geocaching is, like we were, here you are:
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.
Jimmy on the bridge. Here we all are on our hike: Frank, Jimmy, Jeanne, Lia, Debo & Fred
We went on 2 separate searches, and here is Frank finding the first one! We did not locate the 2nd one.
